20 life-hacks for sustainable living

Most of us want to do the right thing by the environment but simply don’t know where to start. If you want to lead a greener life, here are 20 ways to live more sustainably.

1. Grow your own food

But I live in an apartment, I hear you say. No problem! If you have a window, balcony or rooftop, you can have a food garden. With enough light you can even grow food indoors in containers. If you’re still not convinced, seek out a local community garden for your fruit and veggie needs.

Growing your own food is great for the environment, great for your bank account and for your health and wellbeing. What’s not to love?

2. Buy local

Show your local pride and purchase locally produced items. Food and other products that don’t have to travel the globe to get to you significantly reduce our carbon footprint.

3. Learn to preserve

Preserving isn’t just for your nana anymore! From daikon radish pickles to preserved salted lemons, conserving, fermenting and drying foods to increase their longevity and make some delicious recipes is now all the rage.

4. Go vegetarian

Sure bacon is delicious, but cutting meat out of your diet will not only help the planet, it’ll save you some serious cash. If you can’t see yourself going totally vegetarian aim to have at least one meat-free day a week.
